Cancellation before handoff, by either party, and the specific case that worries buyers most: a puppy that becomes unavailable after a reservation has been paid.

01Cancellation by the buyer

A buyer who decides not to proceed should say so in writing as early as possible. The consequences depend on the stage:

  1. Before signature. Nothing is owed and nothing has been paid. Withdraw at any time, for any reason or none.
  2. After signature, before the reservation is paid. The agreement lapses. The puppy returns to availability.
  3. After the reservation is paid. Governed by the reservation policy and the refund policy.
  4. After travel has been booked. Any transport cost already incurred and non-recoverable is borne by the buyer. The remaining position follows the stage above.

Where the buyer withdraws after a puppy has been held for them, the reservation is not returned — but it can usually be transferred to another available puppy or to a future litter. Ask before you assume it is lost.

02Cancellation by the seller

The seller may cancel before handoff where:

  1. the puppy is unwell, injured, or in the seller's judgement not fit to travel or to be released;
  2. information comes to light indicating the placement would not be in the puppy's interests;
  3. the buyer has provided materially inaccurate information in the application or agreement.

Where the seller cancels under (1), the buyer receives a full return of everything paid, or may transfer to another available puppy. Where the seller cancels under (2) or (3), the position must be stated in the signed agreement.

03If a puppy becomes medically unavailable

This is the situation buyers most often ask about, and it deserves a plain answer.

If a reserved puppy becomes unwell, is injured, or dies before handoff, the seller will inform the buyer immediately — the same day, not at the point the buyer next makes contact — and will explain what has happened.

The buyer then chooses between:

  1. a full return of every amount paid, including any transport fee; or
  2. transfer of the reservation to another available puppy, with any difference in price settled in either direction; or
  3. holding the reservation against a future litter, if the buyer prefers and the seller can offer one.

The choice belongs to the buyer, not the seller.

04Rescheduling rather than cancelling

Where travel cannot proceed on the agreed date — weather, an airline restriction, illness on either side, or a transport delay — the default is to reschedule rather than to cancel. Rescheduling for safety reasons does not entitle either party to cancel and does not create a new charge.

05Notice

Cancellation notice by either party must be in writing, to the email address published on this website or to the buyer's email address given in the agreement. A telephone conversation should be confirmed in writing the same day.
